The Department was founded in the fall of 1964 and joined the national joint college entrance exam system that same year, enrolling its first class. It was the second Industrial Engineering department established in Taiwan. In the spring of 1965, Mr. Tan Da-Nian was appointed as department chair, and an evening division was added in the fall, making both day and evening programs dual-track.

To date, the department has produced over 7,000 graduates from both divisions, making up a significant proportion of Industrial Engineering graduates in Taiwan. Many alumni have gone on to earn master’s and doctoral degrees, achieving remarkable success in academia both domestically and abroad. Those working in industry have also made outstanding contributions and earned widespread recognition.

When the university was officially restructured in August 1980, then-Minister of Education, Zhu Hui-Sen, emphasized the importance of strengthening the development of distinctive programs in Biomedical Engineering and Industrial Engineering to meet the specialized talent needs of enterprises. This remains a source of encouragement and a guiding principle for the department’s future development
