The department was established in September 1962 with the goal of cultivating students’ fundamental understanding of mathematics, laying the foundation for advanced studies and nurturing outstanding mathematical talent, as well as contributing to the nation’s pool of applied science professionals.

In 1985, the Graduate Institute of Applied Mathematics was established to deepen research and train talent in mathematical applications. In 1995, it was renamed the Graduate Institute of Mathematics, and a doctoral program was added, providing students with opportunities to pursue advanced studies in mathematics.

Starting from the 2002 academic year, the department was renamed the Department of Applied Mathematics. The undergraduate program was reorganized into three tracks: Mathematics, Statistics, and Information Science. The graduate program offers three corresponding divisions:

In 2006, an in-service master’s program was introduced, offering tracks in Mathematics and in Actuarial Science & Finance.
