The Department of Chemistry at Chung Yuan Christian University was established in 1955. Over more than six decades of continuous development and innovation, the department has built a strong faculty team and advanced facilities. In 1974, it jointly established the Graduate Institute of Applied Chemistry with the Department of Chemical Engineering. In 1981, the institute was divided into the Graduate Institute of Chemical Engineering and the Graduate Institute of Chemistry.

In 1983, the department received approval from the Ministry of Education to launch a doctoral program, strengthening the integration of academic research and practical application. In 1999, in response to Taiwan’s social and economic changes, the Ministry of Education’s initiative to align education with national development, and the university’s institutional plans, the department was restructured into two tracks: Chemistry and Materials Chemistry, each admitting one class. At the same time, an in-service master’s program was also introduced.

With a strong focus on both theoretical knowledge and practical training, student quality has consistently improved. Graduates have gone on to pursue advanced studies abroad or build successful careers in industry, earning the department a solid reputation.
