The Department of Psychology at Chung Yuan Christian University was founded in 1966 by Professor Liu Chia-Yu, the department’s first chair, making it the second psychology department established in Taiwan. With the support of past and current faculty, alumni, students, and university staff, the department has steadily grown over the years.

In 1987, the undergraduate program expanded to two classes. In 1988, the Graduate Institute of Psychology was established. In 1996, the department launched continuing education programs and a Ministry of Education-commissioned certificate program for secondary school counseling. In 2004, an in-service master’s program was added.

Guided by the philosophy of holistic education, the department is committed to training psychology professionals who possess both academic knowledge and humanistic values, along with integrity, teamwork, and a balance between theory and application. Over the years, it has nurtured numerous professionals with strong foundations in psychology, applied skills, and independent research capabilities.
