Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language

The Department of Applied Chinese Language and Culture at Chung Yuan Christian University was officially established in 2002, becoming the first university department in Taiwan dedicated to training global professionals in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. In 2003, the department welcomed its first cohort of 50 students. As Chinese has become the world’s second most popular foreign language after English, the department has opened up new applied fields for Chinese language education in response to global trends.

In 2007, the department launched its master’s program, becoming the first in Taiwan to offer both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chinese language education—adding academic depth to the breadth of Chinese teaching.

The department aims to:

  • Enhance student competitiveness
  • Broaden global perspectives and a spirit of service
  • Support high-quality teaching and research among faculty
  • Provide an excellent environment for teaching, research, and learning

Upholding the principle of holistic education, the curriculum emphasizes internationalization, technology, practical application, and independent learning. Teaching is designed to be dynamic, interactive, timely, and practice-oriented. Students engage in hands-on simulations integrated with professional materials and career-focused programs, allowing them to bridge theory and practice effectively.
